Unit 1: Investigate

For this brief, I engaged with the topic of hair/hair loss and tried to investigate it through as many mediums as possible. Taking photos, filming, recording audio, drawing, scanning and also collecting hair provided a wide variety of different approaches to this topic.
After gathering all the data I continued to think about what to draw from the collected material and how to progress this journey. Since hair loss is something that I had to deal with for over a year I investigated it in a very distanced and objective way. My subjective, emotional perspective was completely left out of the process. But how can you trigger emotion in other people by displaying this topic in an objective way?
The power of music came to my mind and how everyone would connect a different feeling or memory with a certain song. I looked back at the audio I took. Me brushing my hair in different states, slow, fast, rubbing my hair between fingers, detangling it with my fingers.
I excerpted small sequences of the tracks that sounded significant. For example, hair getting stuck while brushing, the pulling of the hair, etc. I looped the sequences, layered them and let them build up and get louder towards the end of the track. The looping is a reflection of the hair growth cycle. The build-up in sound and volume should symbolize the hair piling up and getting more.
To support the audio track I created visuals with scanned hair strands. As the track progresses the hair builds up. Since there is just hair sounds without any artificial instrument underlying it sounds just like a beat. This should provide more space for the listener’s interpretation.

Audio-Visual exploration about hair loss.
